Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has found himself at the center of an ethical controversy surrounding his company's use of AI-powered facial recognition technology. The issue arises from a recent dispute between Amazon and the biometric software firm Anthropic, which has been developing facial recognition systems for various applications.
The disagreement reportedly centered on concerns over security vulnerabilities in two models that were to be integrated into Amazon's Alexa virtual assistant. These models used machine learning algorithms to recognize and classify human faces, allowing them to identify individuals based on their appearance. However, Anthropic claimed that the technology posed a significant risk of data breaches and unauthorized access.
As a result, Anthropic announced that it would no longer support or provide updates for these two models, effectively cutting off Amazon from worldwide access to them. The move has sparked widespread criticism, with many expressing concerns over the potential misuse of facial recognition technology in areas such as law enforcement and surveillance.
