Microsoft has entered the Chinese market with a surprising move, quietly becoming the primary supplier of its artificial intelligence (AI) models to some of the country's largest internet companies. The company's decision is seen as a significant shift in its strategy, as OpenAI and Anthropic have refused to sell their own AI models to China on intellectual property grounds.
According to a Bloomberg report, Microsoft has been selling OpenAI's AI models to Chinese tech giants such as Alibaba Group and Tencent Holdings, despite the fact that both companies have also blocked access to these same models in other markets. This move is seen as a major coup for Microsoft, which had previously avoided deepening its ties with China.
The arrangement highlights the complex and often fraught relationship between American tech firms and their Chinese counterparts. While OpenAI and Anthropic continue to argue against the sale of their own AI models to China on intellectual property grounds, they are unlikely to succeed in blocking this move entirely. As a result, Microsoft has emerged as a major player in the Chinese market, with a significant advantage over its competitors.
